Separate half titles for the Nicholas, Hyde and Browne and the Browne Correspondence sections. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, with blind stamped and gilt publisher's series devices. Extremities worn, including edges and corners; otherwise a very good clean set with many pages uncut. Decorative bookplate of R. G. Booth, and name stamp on first free endpapers. Illustrated by 45 engraved portrait plates, including 4 frontispieces protected by tissue guards and by folding genealogical table. A reprint of the edition of the diary of the writer and gardener, John Evelyn (1620-1706), principally covering the period, 1641-1706, with additional later recollections incorporated into the daily entries. The edition of the Surrey antiquary, William Bray (1776-1832) first appeared in editions of 1818 and 1827, printing about sixty percent of the manuscript and was reissued numerous times. Volumes I and II contain the Diary, Vol. III prints Evelyn's correspondence, 1647-1703 and Volume IV that of Mrs Evelyn and the selected correspondence of Sir Edward Nicholas, (1593-1669), Secretary of State to Charles I and II, Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon (1609-74), statesman and historian, who served as chief advisor to Charles I during the First Civil War and Lord Chancellor to Charles II, 1660-67, and Sir Thomas Browne (1605--82), author.
