Neatly rebacked with original spines laid on, with raised bands decorated gilt with contrasting morocco title labels, gilt. All edges marbled. A little age wear to extremities with titles now faint, but otherwise a very good set. 1841 signature at head of title, Second Edition. Illustrated by 1241 numbered wood engravings and by tables, Second Edition; by 190 wood engravings and by tables, A Supplement. A compendious work covering a huge range of arts, manufacturing and industrial processes with numerous detailed explanatory illustrations. A complete guide to the industrial arts of early Victorian Britain, also covering chemistry and mineral resources. Andrew Ure (1778-1853) was a Scottish physician, chemist and astronomer, who graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1801. He was Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Andersonian Institution (later Strathclyde University), but moved to London around 1830 to work consulting chemist and as an expert witness. He was elected FRS in 1822. First published in 1839, this title appeared in later editions, including US, until 1878.
