Item description from seller

4to. 8 x 9.5 inches. [xx] pp.; Domestic Liturgy, 327 pp. + [1]; Family Chaplain, 385 pp. + [1]. Separate half titles and registers for the two parts. All main text within borders, Domestic Liturgy in double columns. Bound in original Victorian 'antique'calf; boards embossed with blind stamped triple borders, enclosing two panels, the inner decorated; and with bevelled edges; spine divided into compartments by raised bands, with triple bands extending into boards and decorations, with contrasting red morocco title label, gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges red and five coloured ribbon markers. Extremities worn and spine faded. Occasional spotting and staining and one pencil note inside, but generally clean interior. Recent blue ink inscriptions and printed address labels on verso of first free endpaper. This selection of services, collects, epistles, gospels, psalms and prayers has been extracted from the Book of Common Prayer for use at home, 'where the Head of every Christian Family should take upon himself the office of 'Domestic Chaplain.' It therefore omits 'those portions of the Liturgy which the Priest only may pronounce' and the services are rearranged for readers of the laity. The compiler considers that this domestic provision will be useful in cases where families are unable to visit, or find space in, their local church, 'owing to the inadequacy of church accommodation in populous places, - to the distance of the church from many of the dwellings, in extensive agricultural parishes, - to the uncertainty of the weather during a great part of the year.' The second part of the book supplies short sermons by Dale for delivering every Sunday of the year at home. Thomas Dale (1797-1870), theologian, had already published several collections of poems, by the time he graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and was ordained in 1823, being regarded as a high-church evangelical. He spent the greater part of his career in his native London, running a school in Camberwell (where he taught the young John Ruskin), as a preacher and professor of English at London University. Enjoying the patronage of Sir Robert Peel, he was incumbent of several successive parishes, including St. Bride's and was a canon of St. Paul's, culminating in his appointment to the vicarage of St. Pancras, then the most populous parish in London, 1846-61. He retired to a rural living in Hertfordshire before becoming briefly Dean of Rochester in 1870. A scarce title.
