Bound in original green cloth, gilt, front board with blind stamped border enclosing gilt block of dragonfly, in price clipped pictorial (with copy of frontispiece fixed) dust wrapper, which has darkened spine and edges and chips at head and tail of spine. Colour speckled edges. Minor wear to extremities and some foxing, largely confined to flyleaves and fore edge; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 38 plates in black and white and colour, including frontispiece and by text figures. Pictorial endpapers. First edition of a volume in the well known Wayside and Woodland series appearing from Frederick Warne after 1895. Cynthia Evelyn Longfield (1896-1991) was an Anglo-Irish entomologist, who became known as 'Madame Dragonfly', after the publication of this title. She took part in several collecting expeditions in the topics and worked as a research associate at the Natural History, Museum, London, where she became the Museum's dragonfly expert.
