David Lean was one of the greatest moviemakers of the twentieth century. He had an astonishing career that spanned six decades and included such diverse classics of the cinematic age as Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr Zhivago and A Passage to India.
