Folio. Original marbled paper wrappers, backstrip worn, a few minor edge tears, sl. brown stain to head of inner front wrapper, & first few leaves. A pencil note on inner rear wrapper states 'Ex [Sir Thomas] Phillipps, part lot 19/1/1977'. The vast manuscript collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps,1792-1872, was gradually dispersed in the century after his death mostly through auctions, but also in private sales. The so-called 'residue of the residue' was then sold to H.P. Kraus in 1977 and the dispersal continued. Wicketshaw (later Waygateshaw) House dates from the 16th century, and was owned by the Murray family of Touchadam. The house passed by marriage to Alexander Lockhart in 1539. Stephen Lockhart was indicted in the murder of Henry Lord Darnley in 1572. The family forfeited the Estate for taking part in the Pentland Rising of 1666, but they later regained the estate and sold it to their cousins the Weir family in 1720. This manuscript may have been prepared as part of the process of the transfer of the property. It also dates from the same year as the South Sea Bubble. Legend says that the Holy Grail was taken to Scotland and buried on the Weir estate. The National Library of Scotland records, 'Wicketshaw', being a modern account of the estate (parish of Carluke) and of its Lockhart owners, 19th century. Ms. 3235.
