Plato's Dialogues translated by Benjamin Jowett (1817 1893), master of Baliol College, Oxford, 'revised and corrected throughout, with marginal analyses and an index of subjects and proper names.' '[Jowett's] first intention was to produce a commentary on the Republic. But, concluding that this text was to be understood only through an analysis of Plato's other works, he commenced what eventually became his translations of the dialogues, with introductions in which many of his own theological and philosophical ideas were embedded. The translation appeared in 1871 in four volumes and in a revised edition in five volumes in 1875. There followed a translation of Thucydides, with notes on the Greek text, in 1881, and of Aristotle's Politics in 1885. A third edition of his translations of Plato appeared in 1892, but the edition of the Republic, which had been in a sense the foundation and starting point of all his work as an editor and translator of the Greek classics, was still unfinished at his death and was completed and published by his friend and biographer Lewis Campbell. For thirty years the work had occupied the chief place among his interests. [.] His admirers thought that his translations of Plato and Thucydides superseded all previous translations in elegance and polish, and even some modern translators have been content to use Jowett's version as a basis for their own work. But one of his twentieth-century successors in the chair has asserted that any page of Jowett's translation of Plato 'will supply some evidence of Housman's stern judgment' (Lloyd-Jones, 16).'
