An illustrated nineteenth-century guide to diamonds and precious stones, by the renowned jeweller Harry Emanuel. The second edition of this work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Binder's label of Leighton, Son and Hodge to the rear paste down. Illustrated with five plates showing the different cuts of famous diamonds, and with a title page illustrated as a colour plate, as well as the regular title page. Collated, complete. A guide to the properties, characteristics, geographical occurrence, and values of precious stones, as well as methods of cutting and polishing them. This work particularly focuses on diamonds, with descriptions of famous large diamonds such as the Koh-i-Noor, the Shah and the Star of the South. This second edition also contains additional notes on diamonds. The author Harry Emanuel (1831-1898) was a notable British jeweller, goldsmith and collector, who was bestowed titles such as 'gold and silversmith to the Queen and Prince of Wales'. His work was displayed at the International Exhibition of 1862 and the Paris Exhibition of 1867. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with fading to the spine and marks to the rear board. Shelf wear to the extremities. Front hinge is slightly strained but held firmly. Front free end paper and illustrated title page are coming loose but remain intact. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for a little offsetting to the non-illustrated title page. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 909M22
