2 vols. Folio. Occasional spotting, otherwise a nice clean copy. Later half tan calf, raised bands, compartments ruled & dec. in gilt, brown morocco labels; largely inoffensive acid marking to spine; hinges sl. rubbed. Nineteenth century six-line inscription on 23G1 by the word 'Scorce': 'The sense of this word is totally mistaken by our great lexicographer.' Fleeman 55.4D/6; Alston V 1818; ESTC T116656. Half Calf. Condition: Very Good. Folio, 44 by 28 cm. Modern calf over marbled boards. One pinprick on spine label of Vol. II. First few leaves, including title of second volume, with one tiny wormhole near bottom, and one small burn hole, the latter affecting a few letters of the first leaf of text. Wear to edge of title pages. Light scattered soiling and foxing, but overall the pages come off as unblemished. Seller Inventory # 003493

Two Volume Set, uniformly bound in full leather. Large Folio Volumes. The spine cover on Volume 1 is cleanly detached and the boards are loosening on this volume as well. Internally quite clean and the bindings are otherwise solid. Not Ex-Lib. First published in 1755, this is the last lifetime edition (Johnson died later that year) of one of the most famous books in the English language, the last of the initial sequence of editions in the original folio format. The text is that of the fourth edition, Johnson's only major revision of his text, with the unabridged entries and citations of usage by those Johnson considered the best authors. Contemporary black morocco, skilfully rebacked and relined, boards ruled in gilt with a french fillet, fleurons at corners, decorative roll gilt to turn-ins. Bookplates of Admiral Sir Charles Little (1882-1973). Sides a little scuffed in places, a little spotting and toning towards beginning and end of each volume, small chips at peripheries of initial few leaves of vol. I, an excellent copy.
