Bound with numerous blanks both preceding & following the text black. Contemp. full sheep, spine ruled & with devices in gilt; lacking spine label, rather rubbed. Contemp. owner's inscription on titlepage; booklabel of D. Wickham. A decent, internally clean & fresh copy. ESTC T109993, listing six copies in the UK, inc. BL. First published in 1795. With a new preface to the second edition. Lamb observed in his essay 'The Old Margate Hoy', in Last Essays of Elia, that he was not enamoured of the seaside, and observed that 'no town-bred or inland-born subjects can feel their true and natural nourishment at these sea places'. 'Nature', he continued, 'where she does not mean us for mariners and vagabonds, bids us stay at home'.
