Boards have a little foxing of spine and some foxing of page edges extending into margins. Illustrated by 32 pages of black and white plates, including 4 early maps and 28 black and white photographs, and by text figures. Map endpapers. A social history of the building and development of the East End of London, including the riverside hamlets, the villages, the period of great expansion (the docks and industry) and the development of suburbia. This section examines trades and occupations, entertainments and customs, gardens, parks and open spaces and ends with 'the age of flats.'
