Some foxing and staining but otherwise good interior. Label of J. F. Heathcoat, Chemist and Druggist, 4, Gallowtree-Gate, Leicester pasted on half title. Label of Thos. Heathcoat on front pastedown and stamped at top of title with signature. A single alphabetical sequence of conditions, diseases and medicines. This popular short guide was first published in 1781 and appeared in numerous editions into the nineteenth century. ESTC and many of the COPAC entries ascribe it's authorship to the fashionable London physician, Sir John Elliot (1736-86). His DNB entry, however, states that this doctor did not publish anything and that the actual author is John Elliot MD (1747-87) who carried out important work on sensory physiology including the observation of light and colours. Monk died in Newgate, awaiting trial for assault after discharging a pistol in the presence of his beloved and her companion. A list of his publications, ascribed to Sir John Elliot appears in the Royal College of Physicians Munk's Roll, Lives of the Fellows. This is a reprint of the 1827 edition by another publisher, which doesn't appear in COPAC and was owned by a Leicester chemist.
