Small 8vo. 4.25 x 6.5 inches. xiv + 288 pp. Bound in full morocco with gilt borders by Maclehose of Glasgow; spine in compartments with raised bands decorated gilt with contrasting maroon morocco title label, gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges yellow. Traces of foxing on first and last few pages but otherwise a fine copy. Armourial bookplate of John Maclellan Mackechnie. Decorated by headpiece vignettes, including half title and dedication pages, and by publisher's device on title page. This work is the best known translation by the classical scholar, Francis Howes (1776-1844), who was educated at Norwich and Cambridge, held a number of livings and was a minor canon of Norwich Cathedral from 1815. Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65 BC-8 BC) fought on the losing side at Philippi, but was later reconciled with Augustus and settled on an estate at Tivoli.
