About this Item

Description:

234 x 165 mm. (9 1/4 x 6 1/2"). 311, [1] pp.Preface by Thomas Carlyle. EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE DARK BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, IN THE STYLE OF THE DOVES BINDERY (stamp-signed and dated 1907 on rear turn-in), covers with large strapwork arabesque accented with floral sprays and small tools, raised bands, spine compartments with mirrored floral design, gilt rule turn-ins with floral cornerpieces, all edges gilt and gauffered with two rows of dots. Housed in a fleece-lined blue buckram slipcase. Initials in red, two pages partly printed in red. Tidcombe DP8; Tomkinson, p. 55. For the binding: Tidcombe, p. 464. â Light offsetting to free endpapers from turn-ins (as usual), A VERY FINE COPY, the text fresh and bright, and the binding sparkling and unworn. This is one of the 26 intriguing (and obviously uncommon) examples Tidcombe has identified as imitation Doves bindings, a group of handsomely executed volumes that continue to be mysterious. Tidcombe differentiates between (a) forgeries (those books that are stamp-signed with "C - S" and a date) and (b) unsigned "copies of Doves bindings or bindings in the Doves style." But she treats them as one group because of their common features. For example, signed or unsigned, all of the suspect bindings cover Doves Press books, are bound in dark blue morocco, have green silk double headbands, have the letters "E" and "S" close together on the signature pallet, and so on. Although Tidcombe suggests that the person responsible for the forged Doves bindings could possibly have been the former Doves Bindery finisher Charles McLeish, she does not settle on him or any other likely candidate. Whoever was behind them, the volumes in this puzzling group of bindings are actively collected for their value as counterfeits. The Doves Press was founded in 1900 by Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker to produce their ideal of the "Book Beautiful." Over the next 16 years, they produced 51 titles in which they demonstrated that printing with plain type (designed by Walker) that is well set and with good margins could produce notable work. As Cave says, the Doves Press books, "completely without ornament or illustration, . . . depended for their beauty almost entirely on the clarity of the type, the excellence of the layout, and the perfection of the presswork." The text here is by the American Transcendentalist poet and philosopher that, Tidcombe tells us, Cobden-Sanderson considered "a pinnacle of a man." Cobden-Sanderson met Emerson when the latter visited London in the 1860s; Tidcombe notes that the future binding and private press pioneer was drawn to Emerson's "idealism, and to the hint of mysticism that coloured his view of nature." The essays here are from a collection first published in 1841, and include "Love," "Friendship," "Self-Reliance," "Intellect," and "Art.". ONE OF 300 COPIES ON PAPER (and 25 on vellum). Hardcover. Condition: New. Contents: Preface. 1. The problem of the nationalist time. 2. Before the nationalist hour. 3. History and the historical moment. 4. Reflexive time. 5. After the time of nationalism. 6. Metaphors after the nationalist hour. Index. "These essays show that contrary to the widespread belief, nationalism is not all about the celebration of territory as a marker of identity and power; it is also about time in a fundamental way. The anxiety over time is as fundamental as the one over space. Indeed space appears as one in the distribution of the elements that go into making the time of nationalism. The author contends that, each time the nationalist destiny of Muslim Bengal took a clearly discernible turn, it seemed to the actors as final and irrevocable--the actors of 1937, 1947, 1954, 1957, or 1971. But in each instance it was a case of time playing with its finality, taunting it, mocking it, bringing forth in front of its final version its earlier and later incarnations. In this sense, the history of nationalism is not something that can be termed as the "the foreshadowing of the nation." Samaddar argues, if what preceded 1971 could be viewed as foreshadowing the great event, there was many convolutions as opposed to evolution. What foreshadowed 1971 was not only in terms of an outcome, but its future--the exasperating uncertainties of the nationalist destiny in its encounter with democracy. Democracy has always presented a different set of morals that have interrogated nationalism. Nationalism can never escape this encounter for its greatest claim has been that it is democratic. All this is evident from the recent history of Bangladesh--the most singular, the most recent, and the most homogenous nation in the region. Also it is a country where the moral interrogation of the ideal of nationalism has gone farthest. Therefore in these essays, time before 1947 and after, and the time when icons were not icons and the time when icons lay under the blows of the iconoclasts, lie wrapped in a single format often indistinguishable from each other." Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Contents Introduction. 1. Hunter Gatherer and early agriculturist archaeological evidence for contact. 2. Our tribal past. 3. A Chalcolithic village in a famine belt. 4. Pastoralism as an issue in historical research. The essays in this volume are an attempt to tease out from the scant archaeological (and to some extent historical) sources available some information on certain aspects of rural societies in the past mobility subsistence from animal herding symbiosis between crop production and animal rearing situating hunters and gatherers and the importance of forest as integral to rural life rather than the dichotomous other of the field or village. There is also an attempt to bring out the ways in which tribal society continuously misrepresented in academia today laid the foundations of many aspects of Indian civilization in the remote past. 109 pp. Seller Inventory # 55609

Alexandra Kollontai; Foreword by Parvathi Menon

New Soft cover

Soft cover. Condition: New. The revolutionary legacy of Alexandra Kollontai (1872-1952) has slipped into relative obscurity. This is somewhat surprising, because she was a voluminous writer on politics, Marxist theory, country-specific economic studies, and the women's question. She left letters, diaries, memoirs and pamphlets, theoretical tracts, articles, and creative literature. She authored two novels, The Love of Worker Bees and Red Love, which explored issues of love and socialist morality. Kollontai was resolutely opposed to bourgeois feminism, the term used to demarcate a form of feminism that was anti-Marxist and that drove an agenda of free love. She was, however, perhaps the only one amongst a small group of women and men communists in her time who engaged intellectually with issues of sexual morality in the context of women's liberation. She envisioned the many possibilities for women's freedom that lay locked in a socialist future, and set out the mechanisms by which women's subordination - political and economic, of course, but equally in terms of ideas and attitudes - could and must be undone under socialism. This volume brings together some of her most important writings on gender, sexuality and women's liberation. Seller Inventory # 123611
