The second edition, after the first of 1796, in three volumes, 'with considerable additions.' Octavo (21.5 x 13.5cm). 'Treats of natural & artificial magnets and theories of magnetism, of electricity, electrical apparatus, animal & medical electricity, meteorology, light and optics in the first volume. The second volume is devoted primarily to chemistry, but includes hydraulics. Finally, the third volume deals with plants and animals, with a few plates dealing with vision and the eye. The fine engraved plates illustrate numerous mechanical phenomena as well as physics, electricity, metreology &c.'- Roberts & Trent. Vol. I, pp. xx,516; Vol. II, pp. xvi, 528; Vol. III, pp. xii,516,[8]. With 56 copperplates. Some occasional light foxing. Presentation inscription from Richard Valpy, author, headmaster of Reading Grammar School and classical scholar, dated Nov, 1800. Bound in contemporary mottled calf, the spine in six panels with label, gilt. Neatly re-hinged, some loss to the spine gilding, but an excellent copy. Vg.
