Presentation copy to a British Naval Captain. xxiii, 348 pp., errata. 2 lithographs. Recent respine over original gilt-bordered calf boards, maintaining the original morocco title label. Rubbing to the gilt and chipping to the leather at the boards, alongside some scratch markings. Off-setting to the text and foxing throughout. Inscription reads 'Given by the author to Capt. Hewit RM Lymington 5th Jan. 1825'. Capt. Charles Hewit's bookplate and the later owner's ink signature to ffep. This collection of letters provides an account of (and commentary on) what to expect from life as a settler emigrant in the British colonies. With the first few letters providing more critical observations and of life in New South Wales (Australia) and the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) and the United States, the author then turns to an extensive account detailing and advocating for settling in the Canadian colonies, arguing that 'the British Provinces in North America, and especially the Canada's, possess advantages superior to all other countries which we have noticed' (p.301). Our Standard service is currently Royal Mail Tracked with FedEx, UPS and Parcelforce for larger parcels; local conditions vary so please be patient with us.
