(London: Macmillan 1896). First printing of the edition illustrated by Hugh Thomson and with an Introduction by Austin Dobson. Octavo. pp xviii, 437, [1], [4] adverts. 56-page publishers' catalogue, dated July 1896, at rear. Two pages of adverts at rear. Original ox-blood cloth with covers patterned in blind lettered in gilt to the spine and front board. Frontispiece with tissue guard a bit foxed. A good copy (partially faded to the spine, pushed and worn at the spine ends, rubbed to the edges of the spine, offset to both sets of end-papers, bookseller's ticket to front paste-down ghosted to the front free end-paper, edges of lower board faded). Interior clean. NB: this is the first Hugh Thomson Edition with 40 full-page illustrations. NNB: It should not be mistaken for the later reprints on line from 1897 and later.
