ENGLISH SYNONYMES EXPLAINED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER GEORGE CRABB 1854. I can remember exactly where I got this book…many years ago…at an auction in the Palazzo of a noble family along the Tiber in Rome, about 1980. Apparently, the Count was keen that his English be up to international standards! So here is your chance to do the same. I am very pleased to offer: English Synonymes Explained, in Alphabetical Order, By George Crabb. The Sub-title goes on: With Copious Illustrations and Examples Drawn from the Best Writers, to Which is now Added an Index to the Words. This medium-sized but rather thick hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 x 2 inches, 799 pages) was published by Simpkin, Marshall and Co. dated 1854, and the Tenth Edition (so stated on the title page). The book is bound in blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt titles on the spine. The book opens with a short two-page Preface by the Author and then gets right down to it, an alphabetical march across the English language, starting with the word Abandon and ending with the word Youthful. Condition: This book is in very good condition; one wonders if the Count used it as much as he could. The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled and there is a small abrasion in the gutter of the front cover. The spine is a bit faded and the gilt titles are a bit muted but still fully legible. Inside, the Count has left his book plate but that is the only mark I found in the book. There is some very minor and incipient foxing, on the early and late pages, which does not penetrate the book whose pages are remarkably bright and clean and without age-toning. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book came from the library of the Palazzo, but it was not a public library and the book did not circulate freely.
