English Windmills: Containing a History of Their Origin and Development, With Records of Mills in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex (Paperback or Softback)

"English Windmills" provides a comprehensive and scholarly exploration of the architectural and industrial heritage of milling in England. This first volume focuses on the origins and historical development of these iconic structures, offering a detailed survey of windmills across the counties of Kent, Surrey, and Sussex. M. I. Batten meticulously documents the technical evolution of windmill design, from the early post mills to the more advanced tower and smock mills that once dominated the rural skyline.

The work serves as both a historical record and an architectural study, highlighting the critical role windmills played in the social and economic life of the English countryside. By cataloging individual mills and their unique characteristics, the author preserves the history of a disappearing technology and the craftsmanship that sustained it. Readers will find in-depth accounts of specific sites, mechanical components, and the regional variations that define the character of the Home Counties. "English Windmills" is an essential resource for those interested in industrial archaeology, regional English history, and the functional beauty of traditional engineering. Through its focused lens on Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, it captures a vital chapter of Britain's agricultural and structural past.
