Professionally bound to style in full speckled calf; spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, red morocco lettering piece in the second. (Title and following six leaves very slightly shorter (i.e., one or two millimeters shorter) and possibly supplied. Ink ownership inscriptions washed from the title. Intermittent leaves washed, though evidently not supplied, based on the consistency of manuscript annotations. Neat repair to gutter of leaf B.) Pagination: [12], 362, [22] pages. First Edition, First Issue. Locke Wipes the Slate Clean with His Groundbreaking Idea of the Human Mind. "His conclusion is that though knowledge must necessarily fall short of complete comprehension, it can at least be 'sufficient'; enough to convince us that we are not at the mercy of pure chance, and can to some extent control our own destiny" (PMM 164) Issue Points Title page with proper printing of the two "SS" in "ESSAY" and 30 (five rows of six) type ornaments. Elizabeth Holt printing with This example has the following misnumbered leaves: 50 for 76; 55 for 77; 287 as 269; 296 as 294; and 303 as 230. (Not 85 as 83, as sometimes seen.) Therefore, 5 of 6 possible misnumberings. Yolton notes the misnumberings appear in "many copies of both issues, indiscriminately."
