About this Item
Half title. Orig. black cloth. Pink & red pictorial d.w., unclipped. top edge pink. First published in the U.S. in 1967. Set in the mid-1930s depression era Chicago, Eustace Chisholm and the Works follows the plight of characters on the fringes of society. Central to the novel is the 'tragic love-affair' between a young male student and his part-Cherokee landlord, the latter being unable to accept his sexual desire for another man. Described by the Guardian as a 'violent hallucinatory work', the novel's content resulted in Purdy being referred to as a 'homosexual writer' for the rest of his life, a label he fervently disagreed with.
