The Excellent Board II: New, Practical Solutions for Health Care Trustees and Ceos

The Excellent Board II is a collection of articles that cover topics vitally important to a board's effectiveness. It addresses new legal and regulatory accountabilities facing CEOs and governing boards with new information on hospital-physician relationships and information technology. The mix of articles gives tustees, as well as board and committee chairs, a solid grounding in what it takes for superior performance.

Karen Gardner has been a health care editor for more than 25 years as editor of Trustee magazine since 1989 and, prior to that, as executive editor of periodicals for the Joint Commission. Before entering the health care field, Gardner edited several legal publications. Gardner writes a monthly column in Trustee, has published numerous articles in the magazine, and is the editor of a book on quality in hospice care published by the Joint Commission, as well as the first edition of The Excellent Board (Health Forum, 2003). She is also the editor of Better CEO-Board Relations: Practical Advice for a Successful Partnership (Health Forum, 2007). Gardner shepherded a major redesign of Trustee in 1995, and under her editorial direction, the magazine has won a number of editorial and graphic awards from the Society of National Association Publications (including a Gold Award for General Excellence), from the American Society of Business Publication Editors, and from the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors. Gardner received a master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) English from the University of Chicago, and before entering the editorial field, taught English at the high school and middle school levels in Chicago.
