Publishers dark green cloth over boards, sometime rebacked, in lighter green cloth, with the original, repaired, spine laid down the front pastedown with the armorial bookplate of Col. Sir Harold Mitchell; Bt. Overall, a very good plus copy.Slavery was abolished in the Anglophone Caribbean on August 1, 1834. On that date, the enslaved became legally free. However, their freedom was replaced by an ?Apprenticeship stystem? in which they wer forced to work for their former masters (owners) for 45 hours, and probably more, a week without payment.
