8vo. 5 x 8 inches. xvi + 485 pp. + 3 pp, including [1] pp. publisher's advertisements. Half title. Bound in original cloth, gilt. Extremities worn and ink stain at top edge of pastedown extending for first seventy pages without effecting legibility of text; otherwise good interior. Bookseller's label of Henry Green, 31, High Street, Belfast on front pastedown and neat inscription on half title. Illustrated by wood engravings in text. William Brinton (1823-67) of Kidderminster studied medicine at King's College, University of London and graduated MD in 1848, being elected a F.R.S in 1864. His chosen speciality was gastroenterology and this book was based on his London teaching hospital lectures. It is both a study of the human digestive system and its workings and a treatise on diet and food preparation.
