FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. 9.5 x 7 inches. 347 + [1] + [4] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original navy cloth, gilt, with gilt block on spine and yacht as frontispiece printed on paper with gilt frame on front board. Wear to corners and head and tail of spine. Flyleaves browned and some foxing of title page edges and margins; otherwise a very good bright copy. Illustrated by 130 figures, with 60 plates, including colour frontispiece and numerous drawings in text, many whole page. First edition of this study of the fore and aft rig, introduced into England from Holland after 1660 which includes yachts, sloops, schooners, cutters, barges, luggers and numerous types of fishing craft. The author, Edward Keble Chatterton (1878-1944), born in Sheffield, served at sea as a Lieutenant Commander in the RNVR during the First World War and was a prolific writer of books on ships and the sea.
