Figes, née Unger, had fled Nazi Germany with her parents in 1939, her father having been arrested and sent to Dachau during Kristallnacht the year before. A scarce book, the first appearance in English of this debut novel by a German author who trained as an actor and a graphic artist before embarking on a controversial literary career.
