The pattern of Famous Puccini Operas follows very closely that of the first volume in this series, Famous Mozart Operas, in which the story and music of each work is carefully described and annotated with enlightening critical ob-servations. The chapters are profusely illustrated by musical examples and are so arranged that whichever of the many sets of L.P. records he may possess, the reader will easily be able to match his records with the story and analysis of the opera concerned as it goes along. Spike Hughes, who has many of Puccini's letters and was the author of the composer's life story broadcast in four parts by the B.B.C. a few years ago, applies the same balanced judgment and infectious enthusiasm for his subject to this volume as he did to his study of the operas of Mozart. In one respect Famous Puccini Operas differs from its forerunner in the series: in addition to the familiar works found in the popular repertoire in this country, the author has included a study of an opera rarely performed. here.
