Ninth edition of this enduringly popular series, originally published between 1812 and 1821. The Tours follow the amusing misadventures of the titular character, a foolish clergyman and schoolmaster, and satirize contemporary travel writing. Rowlandson created the vivid, caricature-style illustrations of Dr Syntax's various mishaps, and Coombe composed the narrative poems that accompany them. 3 vols, large octavo (242 x 142 mm). Extra engraved titles and 77 hand-coloured aquatints by T. Rowlandson (complete thus - the title page mistakenly calls for 81). Contemporary red half straight-grain morocco, spines lettered in gilt, marbled sides, endpapers, and edges. Minor rubbing to bindings and spotting to contents: an attractive copy.
