8vo. 8ff. With 3pp plates, containing 6 separate images. Publisher’s printed wrappers, slightly worn at edges. Offprint from the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society (pp247-261, plates V-VII. Birds and animals include the ostrich (heard of in China c. 2nd c BC), the zebra, giraffe, horse, oryx, lion and hornbill. The author quotes mostly medieval texts giving titles in Chinese characters, sometimes romanized. He describes their uses by local people, & in medicine. Arthur Christopher Moule (1873-1957) was born in Hangchow. His father was the Anglican Bishop of mid-China. After school in England A C Moule became a missionary in China (1903-1908), he subsequently wrote many scholarly articles on Chinese topography and biblical studies. In very good clean condition.
