FIRST EDITION, frontispiece photographic portrait, faint spotting to facing title-page, pp. 201, crown 8vo, original lavender cloth with a marbled pattern in maroon and blue, backstrip (slightly faded) lettered in gilt on a label of maroon morocco, a few small spots to edges, top edge slightly dusty, dustjacket a little chipped and nicked with some short splits at ends of folds, some faint spotting to borders, backstrip panel darkened, very good. A scarce book, this copy with a contemporary gift inscription (indeed, in the month of publication) to the flyleaf: 'Marie, from Billy, April 1932'. The four lectures, delivered between 1911 and 1921, consist of 'The Children in Shakespeare's Plays', 'The Triumphant Women', 'The Pathetic Women', and 'The Letters in Shakespeare's Plays' - only the last of them previously published. The Introduction here is provided by the partner of Edith Craig (Ellen Terry's daughter); née Christabel Marshall (St. John became her legal name following conversion to Catholicism in 1912), she was a suffragist, and arrested in 1909 after setting a pillar-box on fire in protest. Earlier in her career, following education at Somerville College, Oxford, she had been temporary secretary to Lady Randolph Churchill and Winston Churchill.
