[10],272pp. plus folding handcolored map, loosely laid in. Contemporary patterned paper over boards, gilt leather label. Light rubbing to boards, heavier to corners, joints, and spine extremities. Light tanning. Very good. The third edition of Sprengel's history of the American Revolution, identical to the second except for a cancel titlepage, first published under a different title in 1783. In the preface to his history, read avidly by the Rhinelanders as Hessian mercenaries returned from the war, Sprengel also includes a list of his sources, comprising a good contemporary bibliography of primarily English books on the Revolution. The map depicts the United States, showing the coast from Georgia to Newfoundland. Sprengel published several works on the affairs of the American Revolution, often suffusing them with his personal Enlightenment ideals of democracy and religious tolerance, and has been credited with contributing to the European identification of America with the ideal of "freedom." He was also an abolitionist who wrote several works on the Atlantic slave trade and translated important British anti-slavery tracts into German. HOWES S846. SABIN 89758. The first German history of the American Revolutionary War. Sprengel (1746-1803) was a German polymath and geographer very interested in the history of the British colonies in North America and the War of Independence. His writings concentrated on the colonies, and the revolutionary events. Sprengel's books satisfied the increasing need of information about the United States and the new nation in Germany, especially after the return of the Hessian veterans, who fought in the Revolutionary War. The map that accompanies the book is the reduced version of Faden's 1783 map of the United States.
