Both 1p., 12mo. Both in fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Each marked 'Yes' in pencil, indicating that the bid has been accepted. The first reads: '5 Octr /11 | Ballenburg | Names of Ships in H.M. Navy - | 1/- | Captain | H. C Lockyer | RN'. The second reads: 'Evelyn's Diary | Last & final bid | 10/- | H. C. Lockyer | 13/10/11'. The son of astronomer Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer (1836-1920), Lockyer was himself an author, his account of the doings of HMS Implacable during the Galipoli campaign being published in 1936, with the proceeds going to war charities. The Garrison Library in Malta is less well-known than its Gibraltar namesake. It was certainly in existence as late as 1961 when Ernle Bradford acknowledged its librarians in his book 'The Siege of Malta'. See Image.
