32 Volumes, octavo (22.5 x 13.5cm), published from 1812-1817. An extensive revision of the work that had been first published in 11 volumes in 1761, the latest edition of which prior to this being in 15 volumes, 1798-1810 edited by Tooke, Nares & Beloe, but now here with almost 4,000 supplemental lives & revisons of a further 3,000. Lowndes notes 'A much improved edition. Chalmers has taken more than common pains in giving accurate lists of the works of such as were authors, with the dates of the best editions.' Bound in contemporary half calf, with twin labels & marbled boards, gilt, and the binder's label(s) of Jacques, Chichester. The later volumes with light fading, some end-papers with light marks, a few minor scuffs & some occasional small areas of loss of marbled paper. Vg.
