"Important as was his contribution to economics, most of his effort and his influence were felt in the field of mathematical statistics, particularly in the development of multivariate analysis. In a fundamental paper [the present], he generalized Student's test to the simultaneously test of hypotheses about the means of many variables with a joint normal distribution.
