Later edition of this translation by the British missionary William Yates (1792-1845), whose Bengali-language rendering of the Bible took a decade to complete. His version of Genesis and Exodus was first published in 1842, in a volume covering the Old Testament up to Esther. Here, the text extends to the end of Chapter 20 of Exodus. Yates arrived in Calcutta in 1815 and, with the exception of a short period of home leave, spent the remainder of his life in Asia. "As well as an orientalist, he was a deeply read classical scholar, a Hebraist, and a student of Chinese" (ODNB). Darlow & Moule 2075 (for Yates's 1842 Genesis-Esther). Small octavo. Original purple cloth, rebacked to style with original title label and portion of original spine laid down, edges sprinkled red. Bookplate recording presentation of vol. to American Bible Union by Calcutta Baptist Missionaries in 1853; 20th-century blind stamps of University of Chicago Library on title page and final leaf.
