Seller: Crappy Old Books, Barry, United Kingdom
Paperback. Condition: Good. Lamb, Lynton (illustrator). 0Still Glides the Stream (1984 edition) by Flora Thompson Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0192811924 Condition: Good (as sold by Crappy Old Books) There are books that shout. There are books that posture. And then there are books that quietly observe the hedgerow for twenty minutes and somehow make you feel that civilisation peaked in a village where the most pressing debate concerned turnips. Still Glides the Stream is Flora Thompson at her most gently devastating. If you?ve met her before through Lark Rise to Candleford , you?ll know the tone: calm, precise, affectionate without being sentimental, and entirely capable of skewering human folly with nothing more than a raised eyebrow and a well-placed adjective. If you haven?t, prepare to be transported to a rural England that predates motorways, marketing departments, and the phrase ?work-life balance.? This is not a book about dramatic revolutions. No one storms anything. No one live-tweets a scandal. Instead, Thompson captures the slow turning of seasons, the texture of village life, and the small, dignified heroics of ordinary people who measured wealth in community rather than square footage. The stream in question does indeed glide ? and so does the prose ? with that almost alarming steadiness that makes modern life look faintly hysterical by comparison. There?s humour here too, though it?s the dry, observant kind. Human nature, Thompson suggests, hasn?t changed much; only the packaging has. Gossip travels, pride bristles, small kindnesses sustain entire households, and every village contains at least one person who thinks they know better than everyone else (they usually don?t). This 1984 Oxford University Press edition is a solid, respectable volume ? Good in the time-honoured Crappy Old Books sense. It has lived a little, perhaps sat companionably beside a teapot, maybe even been read during a rainstorm while the wind did its best impression of history. It is not pristine. It is authentic. Like the book itself. Ideal for: Readers who suspect the countryside once had better manners Lovers of social history disguised as storytelling Anyone yearning for England before roundabouts Those who believe that quiet observation can be more radical than noise Open it and you may find yourself wondering whether progress was entirely necessary ? or whether the stream, still gliding, knew something we forgot.
