Small 4to. (21 x 14.5 cm). pp. xxx+249. Original publisher's red cloth with complementary paper covering to boards in imitation of quarter calf binding, gilt lettering to spine; plum endpapers. Spine faded, some rubbing to edges; internally clean and fresh. Generally a very good copy. A very elegantly set copy of Adlington's 1566 translation of Apuleius's Golden Ass, a uniquely complete Roman novel. Of the stories contained within its broader structure, of the most famous is the story of Cupid and Psyche in which the latter, the king's most beautiful daughter, is envied by Venus who sends Cupid to force Psyche into falling in love with a beast. Instead, Cupid scratches himself with one of his own arrows and falls in love with Psyche.
