Cloth, large 8vo, 26 cm, xxxviii, 1832 pp. From the preface: "While serving the same purpose as previous editions, this Fourth Edition of Granger's Index has departed radically from them in several respects. .The most important change is the combining of the separate Title Index and First Line Index into one Title and First Line Index. .The dropping of prose selections, which accounts for the disappearance of 'and Recitations' from the title, is another important change. (In this edition, all of the Bible and all of Shakespeare's works are treated as poetry.) No prose selections in anthologies included for the first time have been indexed. . Anthologies of prose and poetry have been included if the poetry selections constitute one fourth or more of the whole.; By combining titles and first lines, dropping prose selections, and omitting the Appendix of earlier editions, enough space has been saved to add a Subject Index.This Fourth Edition indexes a total of 577 volumes of anthologies. Each revised edition is counted as another anthology. Of this total of 577 anthologies, 312 also appeared in the Third Edition, 86 have been retained from the 1945 Supplement, and 179 are completely new, being indexed here for the first time."
