An opera lover's copy of this unique account of the different characters and traditions of twenty famous opera houses in 14 European cities. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 1957 Second impression. Pale blue cloth covered boards in fair to good condition. Gilt title over red ground to spine which is damp stained. Dust jacket in good condition, nicked to spine ends and protected by clear adhesive cover. Internally in very sound condition. Endpapers clean. 'Allen's copy Feb 1960' is hand written on the front free endpaper above a list of opera houses and performance dates between 1957-60. Slight spotting to leaves throughout. Occasional annotations in blue pen throughout noted on collation. 13 full page b/w illustrations of opera houses and interiors. 362 pp. Laid within are: Daily Mail paper cutting 'Death of a Jewel in Venice' dated Jan 31 1966 Evening Standard paper cutting 'No, never a night at the opera like this' dated August 13 1966 Paper cutting 'Opera audience takes centre stage' dated 3 April 1994 Sunday Telegraph paper cutting 'Kings and Queens of the High Fees' dated March 15 1992 The Times paper cutting 'Covent Garden transformed' undated B/w image of 'The Opera House Bayreuth' cut from a magazine undated Colour promotional pamphlet circa. 1960 'Winter in Naples, Opera House the S. Carlo' 5 blank postcards of European opera houses and interiors 10 postcards of European opera houses and interiors, hand written circa. 1960 to Mr Alan Allen and Mrs Allen describing trips to the opera and giving an interesting insight into the performances and venues.
