Elliott, known as the 'Anvil Priest', conducted marriages in Gretna from 1814-1840, publishing his memoirs two years later when he had removed to London. He claimed to have conducted nearly 7,500 ceremonies. From the mid-eighteenth century, it was necessary in England to be twenty-one in order to marry without parental consent. The blacksmith's shop at Gretna, just over the border into Scotland, became the wedding-destination of choice for eloping lovers. 'Handfasting' weddings, by declaration, at the Smithy were made illegal in 1940. Seller Inventory # 99492
