FIRST EDITION. 8vo. xi + [v] + 480 pp. Bound in original prize binding in brown morocco, gilt, with blind stamped decorative borders on boards enclosing royal badge of VR; spine in compartments with raised bands and blind stamped decoration. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Embossed stamp of the Department at head of title. Prize label of the Science and Art Department of the Committee of Council on Education, awarded to Frederic Geoffroi, Penzance School of Art. A little wear to extremities and occasional scattered foxing, including some plate margins, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 4 photographic plates. including 2 outline photographs and 2 real albumen prints pasted and mounted, 4 chromolithograph plates, including frontispiece, two black and white lithograph plates and by text figures and engravings. Decorated by publisher's device on verso of half title. The theory and practice of pictorial art which was used as a textbook by the Department of Art, hence it is often found in this prize binding for awarding to art students. The work is noteworthy for the variety of media used in its illustrations, including real photographs, lithographs and engravings. Richard St. John Tyrwhitt (1827-95) was educated at Christ Church, Oxford; a cleric, holding an Oxford living, and writer on art, he was an admirer of John Ruskin. Alexander Macdonald (1842-1921) who wrote the chapter on perspective, was Master of the Oxford School of Art 1865-71 and Ruskin Master at the Ruskin School of Drawing from 1871.
