3 VOLS, over 3000pp, portrait frontis and elaborately engraved title in Vol I, Vol II & III have title pages with printer’s device, historiated initials, 8vo, bound in new style quarter calf with marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, gilt lined spine, new title labels inset on black morocco, gilt lettering, Provenance: with the name John Wyvill inscribed on the title pages, a splendid, crisp, clean set, very good condition, Apud Danielem Elzevirium, Amsterdam,1679. *Willems 1568. Willems notes that this is a rather scarce Elzevier: "Elle est tres superieure a celle de 1665 et se recontre beaucoup plus rarement". A very good edition with extensive notes and variants etc. Latin text. Additional Provenance: two ownership signatures, in a single early hand, in the set are “John Wyvill” and “Jo: Wyvill”. The owner is very likely John Wyvill (1681-1717) of the distinguished Wyvill family of Burton Hall in the North Riding of Yorkshire. His father was Sir William Wyvill, 4th Baronet, and his brother, Marmaduke, became the 5th Baronet and Member of Parliament for Richmond. John Wyvill schooled at Eton, then became a scholar at Trinity College in the University of Cambridge, being granted his B.A. in 1701/2, and M.A. in 1705, having been made a Fellow of the college the previous year. He was Chaplain to Dr John Robinson, Envoy to Sweden, as well as Rector of Orsett in Essex and Canon of St. Paul’s in London (Alumni Cantabrigienses). His brother Marmaduke had attended Trinity before him. The Cantabrigian book owner John Wyvill is unrecorded in the online Provenance Index on the Cambridge University Library website. Nor is he recorded in Book Owners Online. …

In addition to our books, we list over 10,000 portraits, mainly 19th Century engravings, of eminent personages and lesser-known individuals. We also carry a large stock of prints - views of castles, towns, animals, birds, and antique maps. We issue occasional Catalogues which contain an interesting pot-pourri of the above subjects. Our business has always been internationally orientated, and we regularly supply books to over 100 countries, and thereby have accumulated valuable experience both in accurate and reliable descriptions, and careful packing of the books.
