First edition. Format, duodecimo, 175mm. Physical description, [5] 6, [1] 2 - 170. All edges gilt. Plates 2, [2] engravings, Clayton Hall, and the Droylsden Educational Institute. The contents are stitched as issued, lightly soiled and slightly pulled. Blue cloth over limp boards, worn, rubbed,soiled and with edge wear.The covers blocked in blind with the abbreviated tile, in faded gilt, in the centre of the upper cover. Light mustard yellow endpapers, with ink manuscript notes on the front endpapers. The last three pages contain a Subscriber's List. Overall, good copy of a book very rarely seen for sale but reasonably well held institutionally. Droylsden is a town in Lancashire, four miles to the east of Manchester city centre and two miles west of Ashton-under-Lyne. John Higson (1825 - 1871), was born at Whitley Farm, Gorton, Manchester. He lived most of his life in Droylsden, for many years he worked as cashier at the nearby Victoria Spinning Mills, and then at the Springhead Spinning Company, Oldham. He was an avid local historian and researcher contributing many articles to local newspapers and published his History of Droylsden in 1859. He is buried in the churchyard of his local church St. Mary's , Droylsden. A comprehensive biography of him appears in - Speake and Witty, A history of Droylsden. Stockport: The Cloister Press. 1953.
