Front. & plates; the odd spot, pencil marginalia on p.66. Orig. green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; spine darkened, extremities sl. rubbed, a bit dulled. A good-plus copy. An important study tracing conceptions of the devil and nature of evil from antiquity, through the height of paganism, to the early 20th century. Chapter titles include 'The Belief of the Stone Age Man', 'The Power of Magic', 'Magicians and Priests', 'The Horned God of the West', 'Witch God and Devil', and others. The author's preface modestly situates the work in a larger field of inquiry, and names 'other works of readable nature wherein he will find further information and illustrations'. A foundational work of demonology, and surprisingly scarce.
