Brigadier-General Sir James Edmonds was an officer with the Royal Engineers during the late Victorian era who later worked in military intelligence and then returned to soldier prior to the First World War. He served with the British 4th Division in the field in 1914, before transferring to General Headquarters of the British Expeditionary Force where he worked as a staff officer for the remainder of the war. He was appointed deputy engineer-in-chief in 1918, and the following year assumed the directorship of the Military Branch of the Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence. He retired from this position thirty years later, as the final of 28 volumes of official histories of military operations was published. France and Belgium 1914 was the first volume to be published in 1922. It was reprinted 1925 as second edition, and again as a revised and republished edition in 1933, which incorporated new information from French and German official and British, French and German regimental histories, more narrative of RFC operations not covered in The War in the Air. No other volume was thus corrected and republished, errata notified in later volumes.
