He was appointed deputy engineer-in-chief in 1918, and the following year assumed the directorship of the Military Branch of the Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence. He retired from this position thirty years later, as the final of 28 volumes of official histories of military operations was published.

This volume covering Winter 1914-15, the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, and the Battle of Ypres. Folding eight-page 'Addenda and Corrigenda to Volume I and Volume II' laid-in, lightly spotted.
