The second edition in four volumes, octavo (21.5 x 14cm). ' For this work, Robertson received £4,500, a larger sum, probably, than had ever been paid for a work of learning. Charles V is generally regarded as Robertson's masterpiece, It rendered the author's fame European. Hume promptly sent it to France to be translated. Catherine II of Russia in token of her appreciation sent Robertson a gold snuff box richly set with diamonds.'- DNB.
