Signed limited edition, number 942 of 1,000 copies signed by the illustrator and issued in England, with a further 1,000 issued in the US. An attractive edition of the great 18th century novel, handsomely bound by the leading English bookbinders Bayntun-Riviere. An experimental writer who thoroughly ruffled the feathers of his contemporary literary establishment, Fielding is now "generally agreed to be an innovating master of the highest originality. He himself believed he was 'the founder of a new province of writing'. In breaking away from the epistolary method of his contemporary Richardson, and others, he devised what he described as 'comic epics in prose', which may be characterized as the first modern novels in English, leading straight to the works of Dickens and Thackeray" (Drabble, p. 360). Margaret Drabble, ed., The Oxford Companion To English Literature, 6th edn, 2000. Large octavo (233 x 157 mm). With 16 colour plates by Wheelwright including frontispiece, with tissue guards. Mid-20th century brown morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, spine lettered in gilt, gilt in compartments, gilt panel to covers, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Spine lightly sunned, couple of scratches to morocco, closed tear to limitation page expertly repaired, scattered light foxing; an excellent copy. Seller Inventory # 152343
