About this Item
The first edition, published in four volumes 1778-1799 in folio (41 x 27cm). 'Kentish historiography is dominated by Hasted's Kent. The overall accuracy of the work is high and the sources reasonably acknowledged. As well as relying on records available to him, either in the original or more probably in transcipt form, at Lambeth Palace and Canterbury Cathedral libraries, at the Canterbury Prerogative Office, and above all in the collections built up by the Dering family at Surrenden, he had visited every parish in Kent to ensure he was able to give a personal description of them. The maps provided at the beginning of each hundred entry are particularly valuable.'- Currie & Lewis. Vol. I, pp. [4],xii,clii,580,42,[2]; Vol. II, pp. [4],iv,817,[1],72,[2]; Vol. III, pp. [iv],ii,765,[1],51,[3]; Vol. IV, pp. vi,788,46,[2]. Without the errata leaf for volume II, (which is usually missing), but otherwise complete in text & plate with a folding map of the county, a folding map of Canterbury, 35 folding maps of the hundreds and 126 further plates & engraved vignettes. Some occasional foxing, the occasional map slighty trimmed to border, but otherwise a pleasant set in contemporary marbled boards, rebacked to style in calf, gilt & re-cornered, the boards a little rubbed but quite sound & tight.
