About this Item
Screenplay by Robert Rossen dated 20 August 1960 on the spine and with revised pages from 2 March 1961. There were apparently two different screenplays for the 1961 film starring Paul Newman: the present one, and one by Sidney Carroll. The movie would jointly credit both writers for the screenplay. This copy includes a few notes in pencil, presumably by Rossen. Sidney Carroll (1913-1988), the film and television screenwriter, signed an agreement with Rossen (1908-1966), the director, screenwriter and producer, to write a treatment and screenplay based on Walter Tevis's novel, The Hustler. Carroll acknowledged receipt of $3,333.33 on 3 June 1959. This receipt is present in this collection. Also present is a copy of a letter from Rossen sending a script by Carroll dated January 1960, together with a script by himself dated 4 January 1961, to the Writers Guild of America. The letter states that Rossen's "designation of the screen credits" for The Hustler is shared between Carroll and Rossen, and that Sidney Carroll finds this "eminently fair". Rossen's date of 4 January 1961 is slightly inaccurate. The script is dated 20 August 1960 on the spine and the front wrapper notes "Copied: January 4, 1961". However, there are revised sheets dated 2 March 1961 and 3 April 1961, and these, presumably, present some of the combined work on the script. The Hustler was released on 25 September 1961 and was a critical and popular success. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards (and won two). One of the nominations was for best screenplay. The joint screenplay was selected by the Writers Guild of America as the 96th (of 101) "Greatest Screenplays" in 2006. Quarto. 141 mimeographed green and white leaves printed on rectos (additional leaves labelled "4A", "7A", "12A", "35A", and "75A"), secured by three brass split pins. Typed receipt signed by Sidney Carroll, 3 June 1959. Typed letter unsigned, to Michael H. Franklin, Writers Guild of America, West, 10 March 1961. Typed compliments slip from Robert Rossen with pencil note initialled by Sydney Carroll. Original green wrappers, spine and front wrapper lettered in black. Housed in a green cloth folding box.
